Chart For Success In The 21st-Century Music Industry
AN award-winning UK music school has launched a new business course offering invaluable insights for anyone looking to earn a living from music in the digital era.
Led by experienced industry professionals, the course at Point Blank Music College in London incorporates in-depth analysis of new business models and technologies, in addition to essential expertise in recording and publishing deals, management, copyright, licensing and marketing.
The course has been developed by Ruth K Fung and Jos Jorgensen, who is also the leading tutor. Jorgensen is a professional songwriter and producer who composed and produced the theme music for hugely successful TV shows including The X Factor, America's Got Talent, and Britain's Got Talent.
He is also a director of artist management company JOWU Entertainment in China and, with a Music Industry MBA (master's degree in business administration), he brings to the programme a thorough understanding of the international music business.
"The music industry is a rapidly changing landscape. Many people will have you believe its all doom and gloom and that nobody will make any money now that sales are declining," said Jorgensen.
"I totally disagree - the product is simply changing. Whoever is first to anticipate what happens from here will be the next music industry millionaire. The course will look back at the conventional workings of the business, look sideways at what is happening now and predict what this future landscape will look like."
At 18, Jos Jorgensen moved to Toronto and started working as assistant sound engineer with artists including Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed, Elvis Costello and the Bare Naked Ladies. Impressed with his talents, Reed recommended Jorgensen to the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts that offered him a scholarship.
While there, Jorgensen enjoyed one-on-one song writing sessions with Paul McCartney and went on to win the Sennheiser Achievement Award twice as well as The Times Songwriting/Composer award in 2001.
A year later he was signed by Global Talent Publishing. Since then he has worked with Lemar, Blue, Westlife, Blazin' Squad and Terri Walker and has had numerous hits in south-east Asia, Germany, Brazil and France as well as songs on four number-one albums. This year he was honoured with a British Music Industry award for Best Musical Theme on US TV.
Ruth Fung started her career as a writer and producer as part of Artful Dodger and subsequently enjoyed substantial chart success both at home and abroad. She has written with Craig David, Lemar, Brandy, Louise, Liberty X and JLo.
In recent years she has been a partner in the well-respected music industry think-tank, Finger On The Pulse, that continues to research and advise various companies and individuals on the ever-changing landscape of the business.
The Music Business Course will draw on this combined extensive experience and feature topical analysis vital to those seeking to turn their passion for music into a successful career.
On completion, students will be awarded a National Council for Further Education level-3 Introductory Award in Business for the Creative Industries. It will appeal to those seeking employment with record companies, publishers and agents and to music-minded entrepreneurs.
Point Blank already offers courses in music production, sound engineering, singing and song writing. Hundreds of students from all over the world who attend courses every year find no better place to study than London - the heart of the UK industry.
Point Blank Music College is located within easy travelling distance of many world-famous clubs, bars and venues. A huge variety of record labels, recording studios, music promoters and agencies can also be found in the UK capital.
The college has been voted Best Music Production & DJ School for the last six consecutive years and is proud of numerous student success stories. Apart from obvious stars such as former singing student Leona Lewis, many former students have found work in commercial recording studios, major record labels and composing for TV and the games industry.
